Amazon ramps up investment activity in Brazil

AWS, Amazon’s United States cloud computing business, has promised $236.18 million to Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to Reuters. The funds will be used to strengthen Brazil’s infrastructure in South America over the next two years.

In December 2018, the New York Times reported that Amazon was starting to set its sights on Brazil, the ninth-largest economy in the world.

“Brazil is really kind of the natural next country in terms of sheer size,” said Cooper Smith, a former director of Amazon research at a business intelligence company, told the news outlet. “It’s a huge opportunity, and they are laying the groundwork for that today.”

He predicted that in 2019 Amazon would “be all about Brazil.”
