Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners takes ownership stake in blue ammonia project

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has acquired a majority stake in a blue ammonia project located along the Gulf Coast, which will be developed alongside U.S.-based Sustainable Fuels Group (SFG). Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Blue ammonia combines traditional ammonia synthesis using natural gas with a subsequent carbon-capture and storage process, offering a low-carbon approach to ammonia production.

The project will produce blue ammonia with the lowest carbon intensity and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 90 percent, compared with traditional ammonia production, abating 5 million tons of carbon dioxide per year.

CIP said the project has entered into an agreement with International-Matex Tank Terminals (IMTT), a terminal and logistics company, to provide ammonia storage and handling services. The project has commenced detailed engineering (FEED) and will initially consist of two phases, each with a prod
