Record new level of international investors were involved in European real estate transactions in 2021

by Marek Handzel

A record new level of international investors were involved in European real estate transactions in 2021, according to data from CMS.

In its 2022 European Real Estate Deal Point Study, the law firm has provided analysis of the 2,200 transactions that it has provided advice on between 2010 and 2021, which enables it to track trends in the European market.

It has found that 55 percent of the European transactions it was involved in last year were carried out by foreign investors, compared to 43 percent in 2020. Cross-border investors were from Europe, in the main, with the number of intercontinental transactions remaining below pre-pandemic levels in 2021.

CMS believes that the European real estate investment market largely recovered from the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis in 2021. Compared to the pandemic-stricken previous year, total investment increased by around 15 percent to approximately €270 billion, marking a return to the pre-crisis level.
