Coronavirus is unlikely to bring European airports to a standstill, unless it spreads further

Under a base-case assumption that the coronavirus outbreak will stabilize globally in March 2020, with virtually no new cases in April, the outbreak should have only a limited impact on European airports, said S&P Global Ratings.

Temporary suspensions of flights from European airports to destinations in China and potentially other parts of the Asia Pacific region are likely to reduce passenger numbers only slightly in 2020, owing to the relatively low reliance on such flights at European airports.

The ultimate effect of the coronavirus outbreak on S&P’s ratings on European airports will depend on whether the virus has a wider geographic or more prolonged impact.
