Big Wheels Turning: More than 80 U.S. companies commit to going 100% renewable

An increasing number of Fortune 500 companies are emerging as major customers of the U.S. clean energy industry, according to a report released from the American Wind Energy Association.

“In recent years Fortune 500 companies have led an intense search for the best ways to buy more clean energy,” says Tom Kiernan, CEO of the organization.

Fortune 500 companies awakened to the potential of purchasing low-cost, renewable energy in the last four years. Recently, Google announced it will run entirely on renewable energy in 2017, with 95 percent of that energy coming from wind turbines. General Motors will use wind to power a Texas factory that makes 1,200 SUVs a day, including the Tahoe and Escalade. GM and more than 80 other companies — including Amazon, Microsoft and Mars — have made commitments to go 100 percent renewable.
