Back to the future: With the success of the city’s Olympic bid, transit-oriented development continues to create opportunities in Los Angeles

Since its infancy, the city of Los Angeles has had a tradition of transit-oriented development, but the impact of such development has been lost in its post–World War II, car-driven suburban expansion. The city’s initial growth was influenced by the Southern Pacific Rail Corp. rail lines, as well as the Pacific Electric Railway Co., which introduced an electric interurban streetcar network and a local trolley system. Endeavors by these companies allowed Los Angeles to focus on the creation of compact, walkable, pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use communities centered near this high-quality transit system, which today is referred to as transit-oriented development. In a now-famous chapter in the history of Los Angeles, in which external actors promoted automotive travel over railways, the automobile ultimately became the preferred method of travel.
