U.S. REITs rise 2.6% in June

The FTSE Nareit All Equity REITs Index increased 2.77 percent in June, led by strong performances by self-storage REITs (up 7.99 percent), data center REITs (up 5.72 percent) and infrastructure REITs (up 5.38 percent). By comparison, the S&P 500 Index rose approximately 1.9 percent in the month.

Among the four main property types, the best performance was by the apartment sector (up 2.38 percent), followed by industrial (up 2.00 percent), retail (up 0.93 percent) and office (virtually flat at 0.04 percent). The weakest performance was seen by timber REITs, which fell 8.53 percent.

“The recovery in REIT share prices is impressive in both its size and its breadth, with a 21.4 percent total return for the FTSE Nareit All Equity REITs Index in the first half of this year, and all but one property sector reporting double-digit returns,” commented Calvin Schnure, senior economist at Nareit.”
