Morgantown Energy Associates (MEA), a company owned by affiliates of Starwood Energy Group Global, has terminated its electric energy purchase agreement (EEPA) with Monongahela Power Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., in an effort to move away from coal.

According to Starwood, a private investment firm focused on energy infrastructure, the early termination facilitates the early retirement of coal-fired electrical production at the facility, which has been in service since 1991, and transitions the project site to natural gas–fueled steam-only production.

The move supports the company’s obligations with West Virginia University, providing steam supply through existing and new infrastructure investments. According to Starwood, numerous stakeholders supported the termination.

“As an ESG-minded firm, we are always looking to craft win-win solutions with our stakeholders that are also beneficial for the environment,” said Himanshu Saxena, CEO of Starwoo
