SCERS hires James Donohue as new deputy CIO

by Jody Barhanovich

Sacramento County (Calif.) Employees’ Retirement System (SCERS) has hired James Donohue as its next deputy chief investment officer (deputy CIO).

The deputy CIO assists in the formulation and evaluation of investment policies and strategy, the development of the asset allocation and asset class structures, the risk management framework, and the oversight and selection of investment managers and service providers of the $9.2 billion fund.

Previously, Donohue served as the private equity director for the American National Red Cross endowment and defined-benefit plans. Prior to the American National Red Cross, Donohue was with Keyhaven Capital Partners, a European fund of funds and advisory firm located in the United Kingdom.

Donohue’s new role was announced last month, but he will assume the deputy CIO role early this month. The position has been vacant since SCERS’ CIO Steve Davis was promoted from deputy CIO in 2016.
