Rhode Island Employees’ CIO resigns

by Kali Persall

Alec Stais, CIO of the $8.3 billion Employees’ Retirement System of Rhode Island, has left his position to pursue a CIO role at Providence Health & Services, a healthcare system located in Renton, Wash.

According to his LinkedIn page, Stais joined the new company this month after a three-year stint at the Rhode Island pension fund. Prior to his time with the pension fund, he served as managing director and vice president at Goldman Sachs Asset Management. He also was a vice president at MetLife for 10 years.

According to the pension fund’s website, the Rhode Island pension system outperformed the vast majority of its peers in first quarter 2020. From January through March, Rhode Island's investment performance surpassed the median U.S. public pension plan by 4.2 percent, saving more than $365 million. Overall, Rhode Island's performance for the period ranked 28th out of 546 public pension funds in the United States, according to Investment Metrics.
