Ontario Teachers hits $179b of net assets

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan had a total-fund net return of 3.8 percent for the first six months of 2021, with a total-fund net return for the past 12 months of 13.2 percent.

The plan’s assets totaled C$227.7 billion ($179 billion) as of June 30, and Ontario Teachers earned C$8.6 billion ($6.7 billion) in net investment income during first half 2021. The plan was fully funded as of Jan. 1, and even recorded a C$8.5 billion ($6.6 billion) surplus.

“Our diversified portfolio was resilient and delivered positive returns despite the lingering uncertainty of the pandemic,” said Ziad Hindo, CIO of Ontario Teachers in a statement. “We saw strong performance in our private and public equity, innovation and inflation-sensitive asset classes. Gains were partially offset by losses in fixed income and currency.”
