Oklahoma Teachers commits $100m to Oaktree real estate fund

by Lewis Dayton

The $20.7 billion Oklahoma Teachers’ Retirement System has committed $100 million to Oaktree Real Estate Opportunities (OREC) Fund IX.

Managed by Oaktree Capital Management, the ninth vintage of the firm’s Real Estate Opportunities Fund is seeking to raise $6 billion, up from the $4.7 billion that OREC Fund VIII closed with in March 2021 (that fund, OREC Fund VIII, had a target fundraising goal of $3.5 billion). OREC Fund IX will make investments opportunistically across global markets, with a specific focus in debt secured by properties in Australia, China, Denmark, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, South Korea and the United Kingdom.

Oklahoma Teachers’ Retirement System has a policy target of 10 percent real estate allocation for their portfolio. As of June 30, however, the fund’s actual allocation toward real estate was 7.7 percent.
