Equinix, GIC in $1.4b joint venture to build cloud data centers in Japan

by Andrea Zander

Data center firm Equinix has signed a joint venture worth more than $1 billion with Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC to build three data centers in Japan for the cloud computing market.

GIC will own an 80 percent equity interest in the joint venture, while Equinix will own the remaining 20 percent and will manage the properties.  All three sites will provide some 138 megawatts of power capacity.

Two centers will be located in Tokyo and one in Osaka.

The joint venture is expected to close in the second half of 2020.

Last October, the two partners announced a similar partnership, also involving a $1 billion joint venture, to develop and operate xScale data centers in Europe.
