Decarbonizing cities and real estate: The U.S. landscape from a global perspective

Urgent action is undoubtedly needed for commitments to decarbonize real estate and the wider economy, according to JLL in a new report, Decarbonizing Cities and Real Estate.

The report’s key insights include:

U.S. cities lag Europe in their net-zero carbon (NZC) targets and should not wait for regulations before taking action; thinking beyond regulations creates a competitive advantage. Buildings are critical to the NZC transition. Buildings account for 56 percent of emissions across the 18 U.S. cities in the study, and tackling their impact will be critical to the energy transition. Doubling down on energy-efficiency initiatives and exploring on- and off-site renewables, microgrids and energy storage is essential. There should be thinking beyond carbon, since U.S. cities also face significant climate risk and social challenges.
