COVID-19 disruptions compel companies to re-evaluate their approach to mobility

Ashgabat in Turkmenistan is the most expensive city in the world for overseas workers, according to Mercer’s Cost of Living Survey. The annual report ranks 209 cities based on the comparative cost of expenses including housing, transportation, food and entertainment.

The capital was number two on last year’s list.

More than half of the 10 most expensive cities in 2021 are located in Asia. Hong Kong fell from number one to number two, while Shanghai ranked sixth, up one place from last year. Singapore moved from fifth place to seventh.

Beirut, Lebanon, is ranked third, jumping from 45 in 2020. Tokyo also fell to fourth from third and Zurich, Switerland, fell one slot to fourth.

As for the cheapest cities for overseas workers, Mercer's ranking lists Tbilisi, Georgia (number 207), Lusaka, Zambia (number 208) and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (number 209).
