Blackstone’s QTS to buy Britishvolt site for new data center

Blackstone plans to buy the former site of Britishvolt, a failed battery startup in northeast England, for £110 million (€129 million /$137 million), according to media outlets.

Blackstone intends to transform the 95-hectare (235-acre) site near Cambois, Northumberland, into one of Europe’s largest data centers.

The site is currently under an agreement between Britishvolt and the county council. Britishvolt had proposed to build a £3.8 billion (€4.5 billion/$4.7 billion) gigafactory on the site in Blyth before the company collapsed early last year.

Blackstone intends to purchase the site on behalf of its data center landlord, QTS.

In the proposal submitted to Northumberland Council, the cabinet is requested to amend the existing buyback option on the NEP3 site and re-enter an agreement with Blackstone.
