Rare gems continue to break records

Extremely rare gemstones, particularly natural fancy-colored diamonds, continue to attract the resilient demand of the ultra-rich and are creating bidding wars at record-breaking prices.

These gemstones are another option for wealthy individuals wanting to diversify their assets. The six most expensive jewels — each valued above $40 million — were fancy-colored pink and blue diamonds.

And recently, at Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction in late April 2022, the De Beers Blue, a 15.10-carat step-cut fancy vivid blue diamond, sold for $57.47 million, approximately $3.8 million per carat, making it one of the highest prices ever achieved for a diamond at auction, reported Forbes. The total price was well above the gem’s estimated value of more than $48 million.
