More contracts expected for international airport project in Philippines

Developers are forging ahead with a massive PHP 734 billion ($14 billion) airport construction project in the Philippines.

According to InfraPPP, developer San Miguel Holdings Corp. (SMHC) is negotiating the design and construction of the airport with Groupe ADP (Aeroports de Paris), Meinhardt Group and Jacobs Engineering Group, with construction contracts to be awarded in September.

The Philippine Department of Transportation granted SMHC the contract for the financing, design, construction, supply, completion, testing, commissioning, and operation & maintenance of the project earlier this month.

The airport will be developed on a 2,500-hectare (6,177-acre) land plot in Bulacan, and include up to six parallel runways, servicing up to 100 million passengers per year.

Upon completion, the New Manila International Airport project is expected to alleviate congestion at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. It is also part of a “basket of solutions” being implemented to further connect the Filipino people, according to Arthur Tugade, Secretary of the Department of Transportation.

It is expected to be the country’s largest transportation project to date.

Construction will begin later this year and end in 2025.
