Philippines moves forward with largest transportation project to date

by Kali Persall

The Department of Transportation (DOTR) in the Philippines has given San Miguel Holdings Corp. (SMHC) the green light to construct what is expected to be the country’s largest transportation project to date.

Located northwest of Manila in the Bulcan province, The New Manila International Airport will consist of four runways and support up to 240 aircraft movements per hour. It will transport around 200 million people per year upon completion.

The project will cost an estimated PHP735.6 billion ($14 billion) to construct.

The airport was designed to alleviate congestion at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and is part of a “basket of solutions” being implemented to further connect the Filipino people, according to Arthur Tugade, transport secretary of DOTR.

Construction is scheduled to commence later this year and wrap up in 2025.
