Britta Roden covers real estate and infrastructure as a researcher at Swiss Life Asset Managers in Germany. She has 20 years of experience, and Swiss Life Asset Managers has been investing in real assets for more than 160 years. Swiss Life has €300 billion ($350 billion) in assets under management across Europe, including €16 billion ($19 billion) in infrastructure and €150 billion ($175 billion) in real estate. Roden was recently interviewed for a video published on IREI’s website. An edited transcript of the interview appears below.

Real estate and infrastructure share quite a bit of the same characteristics as asset classes. What are some key distinctions and similarities?

Roden: One similarity between real estate and infrastructure is that both can act as inflation hedges. Both types of investment can therefore help protect investors against inflation in times of higher consumer prices. But there are also some quite distinct differ
