Zenobē, an owner and operator of grid-scale battery storage in the United Kingdom, has acquired a 400-megawatt ready-to-build battery energy storage system (BESS) in Low Harker, Cumbria, England, from Innova, one of the largest developers of renewable energy and data centers in the United Kingdom.
The acquisition was enabled by the government’s decision to continue with a national rather than a zonal approach to electricity pricing. It builds on the United Kingdom’s goal of having 25 gigawatts of BESS capacity by 2030, up from the current 6 gigawatts.
Innova has been developing the Harker site since 2022 and achieved planning consent on the project In October 2023. The Harker substation location is key for power flows and solving locational constraints, ultimately reducing costs for consumers. The project will have the capability to provide inertia and reactive power services, which are required to manage the network in the region, following the retirement of plan
