The Vancouver Airport Authority has pumped the brakes on a large infrastructure project at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in an effort to shift resources to immediate health and safety needs.
On Sept. 9, the airport authority announced its decision to terminate the project, known as the CORE Program, saying it was a direct result of the unprecedented effect the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the aviation industry.
“The CORE Program was designed when YVR was experiencing double-digit growth and included a new central utilities building, geo-thermal heating and cooling system, and a ground transportation center including a new parkade,” said the airport authority in a statement. “Due to the ongoing decline of air travel, YVR no longer has the immediate need for the additional capacity in utilities or parking. YVR’s current systems will support the parking and utility needs of passengers for the foreseeable future.”
