Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has broken ground on the $430 million I-15 expansion project in the north end of Utah County.
The construction consists of adding two lanes in each direction from Thanksgiving Point to Lehi City Center. They will also add a frontage road system, 17 new bridges and improvements to the interchanges.
Gov. Gary Herbert (R-UT) said they’re building now, ahead of the population boom expected over the next 35 years.
“We’re trying to get ahead of the curve. We already see the congestion and particularly this interchange here at SR-92 is just unacceptable,” said Herbert to local media outlets. “The thing that keeps me awake at night is can we handle this growth? Which is a good thing, but it brings its own set of challenges.”
The project is scheduled for completion in 2020.
The project is part of UDOT’s $1.46 billion of top construction projects.
Other projects include:
- I-15/215 interchange in Salt Lake County,
