U.S. DOT bumps up critical New Jersey bridge project to high priority

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has released new ratings that are giving a critical bridge project in New Jersey the green light to move forward.

The Portal North Bridge Project is an important element of the Gateway project, a phased expansion and renovation of the Northeast Corridor rail line between Newark, N.J., and New York City. The project will modernize and improve transportation infrastructure for the region and the Northeast Corridor (NEC), which sees a daily ridership of 169,500 daily linked trips, with annual operating costs of $2.2 million.

In 2018, the DOT gave the $1.6 billion project a medium-low rating. The rating has now been bumped up to medium-high.
