The U.S. Department of Transportation is planning to commit $858 million to 20 transport-related infrastructure projects around the United States, as part of its Infrastructure for Rebuilding America grant program.
The Department of Transportation selected the projects on July 25 from a pool of 200 applicants, seeking a total of $9.8 billion, according to Engineering News Record.
The largest investments comprised $125 million each to construct a new six-lane cable bridge across the Mobile River channel in Alabama and replace existing Bayway Bridges along Interstate 10; as well as raise the vertical clearance of the Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore to accommodate double-stack trains.
Ten of the selected projects were classified as “large projects” and had a minimum project size of $100 million and grants of at least $25 million. The remaining 10 were classified as small projects and received grants of $5 million or more.
