U.S. airport projects could hit $70b by 2021

by Jody Barhanovich

More than 50 U.S. airports could potentially account for up to $70 billion in construction projects through the next three years, according to Architectural Record. The projects are a result of an effort to modernize aging and outdated airport facilities.

The average age of airports in the United States is around 40 years old, T.J. Schulz, president of the Airport Consultants Council, told the Record.

The projects will focus on terminals and their amenities, which will include retail, dining and even yoga rooms and children’s play areas, in addition to a decrease in parking and rental car space in favor of alternate ground transportation facilities.

“Airport authorities and designers have done all they can to account for differing airline service trends and new technologies coming into play, and now they’re in a position where they have to either refurbish or rebuild,” Schulz said.

The Record noted that in about a decade, travelers can expect a smoother, much improved pre-flight experience.
