Alstom, a smart sustainable mobility manufacturer, has signed contracts worth €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion) with U.K. intercity rail provider TransPennine Express (TPE) for the supply and long-term maintenance of a new fleet of battery electric trains.
The agreements combine a rolling stock contract worth approximately €930 million ($1 billion) for 29 five-car battery-electric multiple units with maintenance contracts valued at around €230 million ($267 million). The project will help replace diesel rolling stock and support faster, more efficient and lower-carbon rail connectivity across the North of England.
The trains will support the delivery of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), a £11 billion ($13 billion) U.K. rail modernization program covering Liverpool, Manchester, Manchester Airport, Leeds, Hull, York, Scarborough and Saltburn.
