The U.K. government is rolling out a £160 million ($207 million) renewable plan that would power every home in the United Kingdom with offshore wind by 2030, according to several media reports.
Under the plan, funds would be used to upgrade ports and factories for building wind turbines.
“We believe that in 10 years’ time offshore wind will be powering every home in the country, with our target rising from 30 gigawatts to 40 gigawatts,” said U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson in an Oct. 6 speech, according to Oceanographic Magazine.
Johnson said the rollout would make the United Kingdom the world leader in clean wind energy, likening the United Kingdom’s relationship with wind to Saudi Arabia’s to oil.
“Your kettle, your washing machine, your cooker, your heating, your plug-in electric vehicle — the whole lot of them will get their juice cleanly and without guilt from the breezes that blow around these islands,” said Johnson.
