Two consortiums compete for Colombian metro project

by Kali Persall

Two groups are neck-and-neck in a competitive bidding process to build an electric rail metro in Bogata, Colombia, according to several media sources.

One of the bidders is Metro de Bogotá, composed of FCC (Spain), Carso Infraestructura y Construcción (Mexico), Alstom Transport (France), Barcelona Metropolitan Railway and Medellín Metro, reports Global Construction Review.

The other group is APCA Metro Transmimetro, which includes China Harbour Engineering, Bombardier (Canada) and the Xi’An Metro Company. The two teams bested three other consortiums that were also competing for the construction contract, according to a Colombian news outlet.

The winning consortium will design, build and partially fund the line, as well as operate the metro for a period of 20 years.

The project will cost an estimated $4.3 billion with some of the work to be paid for by international loans through a multilateral bank. Construction is expected to begin in April 2020 with the line operational in 2025.

The winner will be announced on Oct. 21.
