TikTok, a Chinese video-sharing social networking service, has announced plans to establish its first European data center in Ireland, according to various news reports.
The news comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to ban the video-sharing app from the United States, citing national security fears. In a turn of events, Washington-based Microsoft has proposed to buy TikTok’s global business, which would effectively keep it in the country. According to Reuters, the entire company has been valued at more than $50 billion.
Parent company ByteDance also said it was considering moving TikTok’s headquarters overseas, possibly to London.
In expanding its presence to Ireland, TikTok will join a slew of other major technology companies such as Amazon, Facebook and Google.
