Telefonica Colombia to sell fiber assets to KKR

by Kali Persall

Colombia’s largest telecom company, Telefonica Colombia, has sold its fiber-to-the-home assets to KKR for €175 million ($199 million), according to Developing Telecoms.

With the deal, Telefonica will receive 40 percent of the shares of a new wholesale venture called InfraCo, which will be controlled by KKR and open to all operators.

Telefónica said the new company will be responsible for starting up the most ambitious project for the deployment of a neutral fiber optic network in Colombia, delivering fiber to around 90 cities in the country in the next three years. Telefónica will contribute its current fiber optic infrastructure, which has already reached 50 cities and municipalities, to the effort.

The implicit valuation of this new company is estimated to be around $500 million.
