Shell and Irish developer launch floating wind JV

Shell has signed an agreement with Irish developer Simply Blue Group to acquire their 51 percent share of Western Star venture, which seeks to develop a floating-wind farm, located at least 35 kilometers (22 miles) off the Clare coast.

The project will have a total capacity of 1.35 gigawatts, rolled out in phases. The first phase will consist of 300 megawatts to 450 megawatts, with 700 megawatts to 900 megawatts to follow.

The Western Star Joint Venture will be developed by Simply Blue Group and Shell floating-wind experts. Shell said the project is in line with its goals to be a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050.
