Shanghai Electric commissions China’s first 8MW offshore wind turbine

by Kali Persall

Shanghai Electric has commissioned China's first 8-megawatt offshore wind turbine, which is now entering operation.

The turbine features "black start" technology, which refers to the process of restoring an electric power station or a part of an electric grid to operation without relying on the external electric power transmission network to recover from a total or partial shutdown.

The 8-megawatt-167 turbine produces 20 percent more electricity than the 7-megawatt-154 wind turbine, and reduces the levelized cost of electricity by around 11 percent.

The solution has been modified to address conditions across the Asia Pacific region, such as typhoons and tropical storms that could seriously damage the grid infrastructure and even lead to blackouts of the area.

The 8-megawatt turbine is the outcome of an agreement signed in March 2018 with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE), which gives the company a license to produce and sell SGRE's 8.0-167DD offshore
