Seven bidders shortlisted for $3.5b desalination project in Saudi Arabia

The Saline Water Conversion Corp. (SWCC) in Saudi Arabia has shortlisted seven teams for the privatization of the $3.5 billion Ras Al-Khair (RAK), the largest desalination plant in the world, according to InfraPPP.

The shortlisted companies include Acwa Power, China Power International Holding/ Ajlan & Bros Energy Company, Engie, Jera, Marubeni Corp., NTPC and Asian strategic consortium.

The plant produces more than 1.05 million cubic meters (37.08 million cubic feet) of desalinated water per day, according to InfraPPP.

RAK is the first bundle of the SWCC production portfolio to be privatized. The RFP package will be circulated to the qualified bidders, and the winning bidder will take a 60 percent stake in the RAK project company.
