Sandow Lakes to build 1,200MW gas-fueled power plant at former coal-based site in Texas

by Kali Persall

Sandow Lakes Energy Company has plans to construct a 1,200-megawatt, ultra-efficient natural gas-fueled power plant, to be located on Sandow Lakes property in Lee County, Texas.

Sandow Lakes was the site of a 1950s-era integrated industrial enterprise with 1,200 megawatts of coal-based power generation. The legacy coal facilities and industrial facilities are being partially demolished and repurposed, making space for the new gas-fueled power plant.

The plant will be developed and owned by a Sandow Lakes Energy Company subsidiary and will operate within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). Siemens Energy has been contracted to reserve manufacturing slots for two SGT6-9000HL gas turbines — among of the most technologically advanced turbines in the world — offering the capability to operate on hydrogen with only minor equipment modifications. At completion, the gas-fueled power plant will be capable of serving more than 800,000 homes.
