California’s San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has added two utility-owned, energy-storage facilities totaling 171 megawatts, as part of its goal to bolster summer grid reliability and advance California's 100 percent clean-energy goal. The facilities are expected to power nearly 130,000 homes for four hours.
SDG&E’s largest storage asset in its utility-owned energy-storage portfolio is the 131-megawatt Westside Canal project, located in Imperial Valley, which houses a high concentration of solar-, wind- and geothermal-generation facilities. The 40-megawatt Fallbrook project, located in northern San Diego County, is the second-largest in its portfolio.
In recent years, California also has experienced repeated grid emergencies during record heat waves, which pushed the grid to the brink due to energy demand exceeding supply. SDG&E's energy-storage portfolio is expected to reach 345 megawatts of power capacity by the end of the year, meeting more than
