by Kali Persall

RWE Renewables has reached financial close on its largest offshore project, the 1.4-gigawatt Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, to be constructed in the U.K.’s North Sea.

According to Power Technology, onshore enabling work will begin this year, with offshore construction works to commence in 2023. The wind farm represents a £3 billion ($4 billion) investment.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has been chosen to supply 100 of the project’s 14-megawatt offshore wind turbines.

“Taking the financial investment decision for RWE’s largest ever offshore wind project is a great moment for the entire RWE Renewables team,” said Sven Utermohlen, global wind offshore COO at RWE Renewables. “Successfully developing a project of this size once again demonstrates our expertise and positive track-record for delivering cost effective, innovative offshore wind energy around the globe.”
