RWE approved to build large-scale offshore wind farm off the Dutch coast

by Kali Persall

RWE has secured the permit to build a large-scale offshore wind farm – Hollandse Kust West (HKW) VII — in the North Sea, about 53 kilometers (32.9 miles) off the Dutch coast.

The concept for HKW VII combines offshore wind with electrolyzer capacity for green hydrogen production, and other flexible demand solutions such as e-boilers and battery storage. RWE also plans to combine the HKW VII offshore wind farm with floating solar panels to allow a more efficient use of ocean space.

RWE will be able to deliver more than 760 megawatts of offshore wind capacity at the site — enough to supply the equivalent of nearly 1 million Dutch homes — as part of a larger goal to grow its global offshore wind capacity to 8 gigawatts by 2030.

The Dutch government is seeking to build out 21 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 70 gigawatts by 2050.

“We are delighted to have been awarded this opportunity by the Dutch government,” added Markus Krebber, C
