Renewable energy has outpaced fossil fuels in the United Kingdom for the first time in more than 200 years, a new report by Carbon Brief reveals.
In the third quarter of the year, the U.K.’s wind farms, solar panels, biomass and hydro plants generated more electricity than the combined output from power stations fired by coal, oil and gas.
During July, August and September, renewables generated some 29.5 terawatt hours (TWh), compared with 29.1TWh generated from fossil fuels.

Electricity generation from renewables has more than quadrupled since 2010, when fossil fuels generated about three-quarters of the energy in the United Kingdom (288TWh). At that time, just 26TWh came from renewables.
