The Port of Long Beach (Calif.) recorded its best January on record, handling more than 700,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for the second time ever, according to various news sources.
The port moved a total of 764,006 TEUs, representing a 21.9 percent increase from January 2020 and surpassed the previous record set in January 2018 by 106,176 TEUs, Freight Waves reports.
The record-setting January volumes follow on the heels of an even more impressive year. According to Mario Cordero, the port’s executive director, 2020 was Long Beach’s best year ever with more than 8.1 million TEUs handled.
This was attributed to the high volume of online spending, with imports up 17.5 percent year-over-year and exports seeing a 7 percent increase from 2020.
