Ontario launches search for developer of 155-acre Canadian waterfront

by Kali Persall

The Government of Ontario has launched a global search for private-sector partners to redevelop Ontario Place, a 155-acre waterfront property in Toronto.

Formerly the site of a theme park, Ontario Place currently hosts live music, festivals, events and activities.

According to the call for development, the Ontario Government is seeking a partner or partners who have the experience and capacity to design, implement and operate their development on the site. Submissions are due Sept. 3.

"Infrastructure is more than bricks and mortar. It's about the people who use it," said Monte McNaughton, infrastructure minister. "We are looking for big, bold ideas."

The province envisions the site as a destination point that could include sport and entertainment landmarks, public spaces and parks, recreational facilities, and retail. Submissions should be commercially feasible and reflect the province's vision for the site, according to the call for development. Residential developments or casinos will not be considered.
