New solar project to supply renewable power to Brazilian aluminum plant

by Kali Persall

Hydro Rein and Atlas Renewable Energy are forming a joint venture to develop a 438-megawatt capacity solar plant that will supply long-term renewable power to the primary aluminum plant of Albras, the second-largest aluminum producer in Brazil.

The Boa Sorte solar plant will begin construction in the fourth quarter 2022, with operations scheduled to start in fourth quarter 2023. Total investments are estimated at $320 million.

Albras has signed a power-purchase agreement with Boa Sorte for an annual supply of 815 gigawatt hours from 2025 to 2044. The agreement covers 12 percent of Albras' annual power consumption.

With an annual capacity of 460,000 tons, Albras supplies aluminum to both domestic and international markets. The Boa Sorte solar plant will contain more than 800,000 bifacial modules, which will provide enough energy to avoid the emission of 61,500 tons of carbon-dioxide emissions annually.
