Macquarie Capital consortium secures Chilean road contract

by Kali Persall

A consortium led by Macquarie Capital has been awarded a build-operate-transfer contract for the 137-kilometer (85-mile) Ruta Minera, a private industrial road in Chile.

Ruta Minera connects the Minera Escondida, the highest-producing copper mine in the world, to Ruta 5 highway, a key north-south axis in Chile.

Local contractors Besalco and Arrigoni will join Macquarie Capital in leading a series of capital improvements and will maintain and operate the road through a multiyear agreement. Improvements will include widening sections of the road, adding third lanes for more than 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) and adding hard shoulders. It will introduce updated horizontal and vertical signage, surveillance cameras, and security signage, as well as regularize various accesses to control the flow and speed of traffic.

Macquarie Capital acted as the exclusive financial advisor for the project structuring and debt financing with local banks. This marks the firm’s first
