A joint venture between Kiewit and Parsons has secured a design-build contract for a 9-mile, $805.6 million extension to the Los Angeles Metro Rail system that will connect Glendora, Calif., to Pomona, Calif.
Kiewit and Parsons built the first two segments of the Foothill Gold Line project in 2003 and 2015, according to Construction Dive. The new project will include relocation of existing freight track, installation of a new light-rail system, construction of four new stations, and improvements at 40 grade crossings, half with new or renovated bridges.
The contract has the option to extend the rail system to Montclair if the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority Board of Directors, which awarded the contract, can come up with the funding by September 2021. The Pomona extension is slated for completion by 2025 and, if green-lighted, the Montclair segment by 2028.
The project is expected to generate $860 million per year for transit projects in Los Angeles County and create 16,000 jobs.
