Iberdrola, Solvay to deliver 75GW solar facility in France

Iberdrola and Solvay have teamed up to produce green electricity through a new solar facility in France.

The plant, which will be built and operated by Iberdrola Renouvelables France, will be located on a 172-hectare (425-acre) site but will occupy 77 hectares (190 acres), supplying electricity to Solvay's industrial sites in Tavaux and Saint Fons. The plant will produce nearly 75 gigawatt hours per year, making it one of the largest solar facilities in Europe.

The land that Solvay has earmarked for this project includes two rehabilitated settling ponds from its former soda-ash plant, giving a second industrial life to brownfield sites for the generation of renewable energy.

Solvay will purchase 60 percent of the green electricity for its industrial plants through a 20-year corporate power-purchase agreement.
