Hydrostor seeks approval for 3.2GWh compressed air storage facility in California

Hydrostor affiliate Pecho LD Energy Storage has filed an application for certification with the California Energy Commission for the 400 megawatts (MW) and 3,200 megawatt hour (MWh) Pecho Energy Storage Center located in San Luis Obispo County.

The project, which at full capacity is expected to be able to generate electricity for at least eight hours, is scheduled to come online in 2026 and 2027, and will help California ensure the reliability of its power grid after the planned retirement of the 2.2-gigawatt (GW) Diablo Canyon nuclear plant by 2025.

Pecho’s estimated delivery of 400 megawatts of stored energy, every hour, for eight hours without relying on fossil fuels or other polluting resources would make the Project one of California’s largest single new energy storage facilities.
