Greensand CCS project in Denmark moves to next phase of development

by Kali Persall

The Greensand carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Denmark has been backed by a consortium of 29 energy firms that have agreed to support the next phase of the pilot project, according to industry sources.

The consortium includes fracking firm Ineos Energy, oil and gas producer Wintershall Dea, and a number of research institutes and universities.

Project Greensand aims to validate the technical and commercial feasibility of CO2 storage in the Danish part of the North Sea. The project’s goal is to build infrastructure and capabilities that will enable CO2 captured in onshore facilities to be transported offshore for injection and storage beneath the seabed.

The first phase of the project kicked off in June 2020, with the initial technical validation studies carried out by the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP) via the Danish Energy Agency. The study will be finalized at the end of 2021.
