Greenhouse gas emissions rise for the first time in three years

by Andrea Zander

Gas emissions rose 1.4 percent in 2017, marking the first rise in three years, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

While most major economies saw a rise, some others experienced declines, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Japan. The biggest decline came from the United States.

The improvements in global energy efficiency slowed in 2017 to only 1.6 percent, lower than the 2 percent improvement seen in 2016.

The growth in global energy demand was concentrated in Asia, with China and India together representing more than 40 percent of the increase. Energy demand in all advanced economies contributed more than 20 percent of global energy demand growth, although their share in total energy use continued to fall.
