Google’s subsea cable to transmit data to Chile and Panama by 2020

Google has announced that its subsea cable, Curie, has completed development and will begin transmitting data from the United States to Chile and Panama by mid-2020.

Curie is currently being connected to the Google network and will power Google services such as Gmail, Search, YouTube and Google Cloud as early as second quarter 2020.

Curie extends 10,500 kilometers (6,524 miles) long and will deliver 72 terabits per second of bandwidth to South America. Google said SubCom, a global partner for undersea data transport, engineered, manufactured and installed the Curie system.

Curie arrived in Valparaiso, Chile, last April, and was the first subsea cable to connect to Chile in 19 years. Commissioned in 2018, Curie was Google's third wholly owned subsea cable.
