Google reaches 100% renewable goal

by Andrea Waitrovich

Google is officially off-setting 100 percent of its energy usage with either wind or solar power. Google announced at the end of last year that it would reach 100% renewable energy in 2017.

Recently, the company signed contracts on three wind power plants, totaling more than 3 gigawatts  of production capacity. Google purchased 140 megawatts from the Grand River Dam Authority’s Oklahoma wind farm; 200 megawatts from EDF Renewable Energy’s Iowa wind farm; and 196 megawatts from Avangrid Renewables’ two South Dakota wind farms.

Google’s energy infrastructure investments have totaled more than $3.5 billion globally, with about two-thirds being in the United States.

The firm started investing in renewable energy in 2010. It purchased a 114-megawatt wind farm in Iowa.

The second-largest buyer of renewable energy is Amazon with 1,219 megawatts.
